DOug thru the years

Hometown:  Forest Hill, Maryland

Age: 24

Doug not only has a successful racing career, but has also been very active in other sports. Doug competed on a local baseball team from 2002-2010. Doug had to stop competing on team sports in 2010, due to racing schedules and traveling to North Carolina. He did not think it was fair to join something and then not be able to play to his fullest potential and not be there for his teammates. When he returned to more local racing in VA, Doug joined his local baseball team for two seasons before a knee injury ended his season.

Not only does Doug excel in sports, he also succeeded in the classroom. The decision was made mid year of 10th grade to home school so he could travel more for racing obligations. Doug set the goal that he wanted to graduate before he turned 17 and successfully finished his senior year in December 2014 11 days before his birthday . He graduated from Abbington Hill School, which is an online school based out of New Jersey.

Doug started racing at his local go-kart track, Sandy Hook Speedway located in Street, Maryland when he was 7 in the kid kart class. From 2007 thru 2009 he won the Junior Sportsman 1 and 2 local championships. In 2010, Doug chose to withdraw mid-season to move up and compete with an older, more competitive age group, winning six out of the ten remaining races. In 2012, Barnes Racing decided it would be the last year for Doug to compete nationally to pursue other racing opportunities. Doug Barnes Jr. would like to thank our local track Sandy Hook Speedway, run by Dennis and Janet Headley ( www.sandyhookspeedway.com ). Also a special thanks to GT Machine, owned and run by Dave and Sue Koehler, Doug can not thank them enough for all of their help thru the years and their awesome motors that ran him up front and won many, many races over the years! (www.gtengines.com). Go-karting was the beginning of Doug's racing career and he will have lifelong friends and great memories of these times! Doug is a WKA national, divisional and local track go-kart champion. He is also 2012 INEX Maryland State Champion for the Young Lions Road Course division in Legend cars. Doug finished 2nd in the Super Truck Division at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC. He was also named 2013 Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Driver in that division. 2014 was a crazy year for Doug as he split his time between running his Late Model at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC with J&J Motorsports and running a few select races in the Pro-Cup Series with Bob Schacht Motorsports. Doug learned a lot and enjoyed the opportunities to run at different larger tracks.

In 2015, Doug ran races between Cars Tour Series and

Tri-County in NC.

2016-  Doug raced at the newly opened Dominion Raceway in Thornburg, VA. in the Nascar Whelen All American Series. Doug finished 2nd in track points for the season and finished 14th in national Nascar points.

2017 - Doug won the Late Model Stock Division Track Championship in the Nascar Whelen All American series at Dominion Raceway.

2018- Doug ran a few select races but Doug decided to take the rest of the season off and focus on the 2019 season.

2019- Doug went back to Dominion to shake the dust off the late model and run some races at a familiar track. A few races in he decided to take another run for the championship back to Dominion Raceway and on October 19th he did it... he is now the two-time late model stock track champion !!

2020- COVID hits...tracks are uncertain of their opening dates. Dominion opens without fans for the first few races. Doug wins the first race opening night. He ended up with 1 win, 6 top 5's and 8 top 10's. He did not run the entire season but still ended up 6th in points at Dominion.

2021- Doug ran at Dominion Raceway, Carteret Speedway, Hickory Motor Speedway, Southern National Motorsports Park, Florence Motor Speedway and made his debut at the iconic Martinsville Speedway.

2022- Doug will run at Dominion and other various racetracks this season. He will returning back to Martinsville in September.
